Does it cost anything to add money?
Yes. Adding money by bank transfer, ACH, RTP or FedNow costs
1% on Free, falling to 0.80% on Metal. Card top-up costs
between 1.55% and 2%, because a card costs us roughly twice
what a bank transfer does. Crypto arriving from an external
wallet is free on every tier.
Do I pay to move crypto out?
Sending to another SmashPay account is always free. Sending
to an external wallet is free on anything over $500. Below
that it is $1.99, and every paid tier includes some free
withdrawals each month.
Is a stablecoin swap the same as a conversion?
No. The conversion rate applies when money changes from one
currency into another — dollars into pesos, for
example. Swapping one dollar-denominated stablecoin for
another does not change currency, so it carries its own rate
instead.
Why does sending euros to a euro account cost less?
Because nothing converts. You are paying for the rail, not
for a currency exchange that did not happen.
What is the difference between ACH, instant and a wire?
Sending out by ACH takes one to three business days and costs
$3. Instant arrives in seconds, any time, and costs 1.75% or
less depending on your tier. A US wire is same-day during
banking hours for $25. Money coming in is charged at 1% or
less whichever rail it uses. Most people should use ACH to
send unless the timing genuinely matters.
What does a conversion actually cost?
Converting between USD and local currency carries an all-in
cost of 1.19% to 3.49%, depending on how much you send. That includes all fees, spreads and
charges — no additional hidden fees apply to conversion, and
the figure is shown to you before you confirm.
What is the difference between the top-up fee and the FX markup?
The top-up fee is charged when money moves onto your card —
once, on the amount you load. The FX markup is charged when a
purchase converts one currency into another. Load $1,000 on
Premium and spend it all abroad and you pay 1.60% to load it and
1.0% on the conversion; spend it in the same currency you
loaded and there is no FX markup at all.
Does my tier change what it costs to send money abroad?
Yes, but not where you can send it. The transfer itself is
priced on the amount — 3.49% all-in on the smallest, down to
1.19% on the largest, and lower again to Mexico — and your tier
then takes 10%, 15% or
20% off whatever that comes to. Every corridor is open on
every tier including the free one, because where your money
needs to go is not something a plan should decide.
Do I pay anything to hold US dollars?
No. Your USDC is held in your own self-custodial wallet.
Nothing converts automatically, so a balance left alone stays
the size you left it.
What happens if I go over an allowance?
Nothing stops working. Staking pays your tier rate up to the
balance shown and 4.25% above it, ATM withdrawals above your monthly allowance
at 2%, and business conversion simply carries on at your
plan's rate. There is no block and no penalty rate — the
allowance is a discount that runs out, not a limit.
What does a physical card cost?
It gets cheaper the higher your tier, because a card that is
manufactured, personalised and posted costs the same to make
on every tier, and the higher ones carry more monthly fee to
absorb it. Metal includes one. Premium is $15, Plus $25, and
Free $35 plus shipping. Getting Premium and a card together
costs $33 in month one — less than the card alone on
Free. The
virtual card is free on every tier and works from the moment
you are approved, so nobody has to pay to start spending. The
metal card is separate: $99 once, from a waitlist.
Why does the metal card cost $99 when the others are free?
Because it is a physical object worth considerably more than a
printed one, and charging for it once is cleaner than folding
it into a monthly fee everyone pays whether they order it or
not. It is a single charge, not recurring, and the Metal tier's
monthly fee is the same whether you order the card or stay
virtual. The metal card is also the one card you join a list
for — it is made in batches, so you reserve one and we
charge the $99 when yours is ready to ship. Every other card,
virtual or plastic, you get on signing up.
Which business plan should I be on?
It is arithmetic, and it is on the page above. Basic costs
least up to about $19,000 of monthly conversion; Grow from
there to $43,000; Scale above that. The exact crossovers are
$19,231 and $43,333; the bands above round to the nearest
thousand, so within a few hundred dollars of a boundary the
two plans are within about a dollar a month of each other — it is not a decision to
agonise over, and you can change plan whenever the arithmetic
changes.
Is there a minimum on business plans?
No. There is no monthly commitment to meet and no volume you
have to reach — if you convert nothing in a month you pay the
subscription and nothing else. That is unusual for this kind of
account and it is deliberate.
When does billing start?
Billing starts when you choose a paid plan. The account itself
is free and there is nothing to pay to open one.
Can I change plan later?
Yes. A card tier changes from the app and applies to the
billing month you choose it in. A business rate follows your
volume, so it moves on its own as you cross a tier. Your
balance, cards and history stay where they are either way.
What happens if I cancel a yearly plan part-way through?
You are refunded what you paid less the monthly rate for each
month you have used, and less any month in progress — so you
give up the two months the annual price saved you, not the
months you have not had. If that comes to nothing or less, no
refund is due. Cancelling is done from the app and there is no
penalty beyond that.
Is SmashPay Business a bank?
No. SmashPay is a financial technology company, not a bank.
Your USDC is held in your own self-custodial wallet, and only
you can authorise transactions from it. Balances are not
deposits and are not FDIC-insured.
